In The Laptops Of The Gods

Story Of My Life
2 August 2008

Wheee~~~
PC Fair is coming to town AND
Dad's getting me a laptop. LOL
Finally...

I've decided which one to get..
The best so far in my budget.
The Asus F8Sg

Well remember in my previous post..
I said I'm gonna let you know about the laptop I wanted.
Here it is...the ASUS G70
The one that cost ₤1600... *sigh*

Here's the article about it from the PC Gamer magazine I brought.

ASUS G70

At almost 5 kg, The ASUS is one of the biggest laptops we're looking at in this roundup - and it feels like it. It's not just the weight: this is a luxuriously spread-out machine which doesn't feel as solid as the Alienware or Dell, but falls into the category of 'desktop replacement' simply by virtue of being big enough to actually replace your desk.

The Metal lid is stamped with the Asus Republic Of Gamers' logo (RoG), and has a lightshow we've come to expect from RoG motherboards: the heatsink at the back glows, the grills at the front glows, even the microphone. Unusualfor a top-end gaming laptop, the keyboard isn't backlit - but it does feel fairly solid.

For the price, it's amazing what Asus have manage to fit in here. Rather than going for the fastest components, they've decided to focus on bang on buck: The processor is the latest Penryn core but not the extreame version. Instead of going for the latest 8800M graphics, there are two 8700M GTs in SLI format - which means you'll be reliant on driver optimisation for the fastest framerates.

The result is incredible: although far from being the most expensive machine on test, it's the only one that hit the framerates cap (60fps) in Company Of Heroes running in native resolution.

Which brings us to the one caveat: to keep cost down, the G70 we reviewed has a fairly low spec screen. Refresh rates are fine, but the 1440 x 900 resolution only just acceptable on a 17 inch panel, and there's no contrast friendly coating either. It means that native resolution is very playable, just not the best thing ever. It's up to you to consider this is a good compromise.

The battery life is terrible, less than on hour, but there are HDMI output for the times you'll be using main power (ie. most of the time). It's not the most portable, nor most glossy, but it's an insanely powerful games machine for a reasonable price.
